Grading Glossary

Essential terms every collector should know

Centering

The positioning of the image within the card borders. Measured as front/back percentages (e.g., 50/50 is perfect).

Whitening

White marks on card edges or corners caused by wear, visible as loss of color on the card stock.

Print Line

A manufacturing defect appearing as a thin line across the card surface, often reducing grade significantly.

Surface

The front and back face of the card, graded on scratches, print quality, and overall condition.

Edges

The four sides of the card, inspected for wear, chipping, and sharpness.

Corners

The four corner points, checked for rounding, fraying, or damage.

Pop Report

Population report showing how many cards of a specific type have been graded at each grade level.

Subgrades

Individual scores for Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface (BGS and SGC feature these).

Black Label

BGS's highest designation, requiring perfect 10 subgrades in all four categories.

Qualifier

A note added to a grade indicating a specific defect (e.g., "OC" for off-center, "ST" for stain).

Raw Card

An ungraded card that has not been authenticated or encapsulated by a grading company.

Slab

The protective plastic case that houses a graded card, displaying the grade and certification number.
